Every year the Oxford English Dictionarychooses a word that became popular or culturally relevant. Apparently, they couldn’t choose “shit,” because there is no other word that better describes 2016. Last year they picked the “crying with laughter” emoji, which also seems like it could be appropriate for 2016. “Vape” was the word of 2014, which is almost as dumb as somebody who actually smokes a vape.

Anyways, this year they chose “post-truth”, which I have literally never heard before. Like, did I skip that day of English class? Maybe my dad used it while lecturing me about my credit card statement? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, because this is just not a word in the English language. “Post-truth” is defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.” See: Brexit, President-Elect Donald Trump, and that fuckboy you’re still texting even though you know it will end terribly.

If this is a real word (honestly, I’m not convinced), I guess it’s pretty accurate considering how absolutely fucking terrible this year has been. But still, there were other words on the short list that should’ve won. My favorite is “adulting,” which I either say or hear at least once every half hour. Let’s just hope in 2017, we get a word of the year that we actually know.
